Superintendent Announces Next Phase for Waltham High School (WHS) Project: MSBA Board of Directors Unanimously Votes WHS into Schematic Design

At their February 13, 2019 Board of Directors meeting, the MSBA voted the project into the schematic design of the project.

During the schematic design phase of the project “the District and its design team, in collaboration with the MSBA, develop a robust schematic design of sufficient detail to establish the scope, budget and schedule for the Proposed Project. The MSBA generates a Project Scope and Budget Agreement that documents the project scope, budget, schedule and MSBA financial participation to forward to the MSBA Board of Directors for their consideration. Approval by the MSBA Board of Directors is required for all projects in order for the MSBA to enter into a Project Scope and Budget Agreement and a Project Funding Agreement with the District.”

The Honorable Jeannette A. McCarthy, Mayor of the City of Waltham, expressed her excitement that the process is moving forward to the next phase so that the entire city can see the years of hard work done by the Waltham School Building Committee (SBC), architects from SMMA, and Waltham School Committee.  The Superintendent of Schools echoed the Mayor’s comments and stated, “I am glad that the MSBA has recognized the hard work and dedication of the Waltham team on this project.  The work and the SBC and SC has positioned us well and now we will work with the community to deliver a world class facility that provides all of our students and our entire community the access they deserve.”  Waltham High School Principal Paul Maiorano shared his desire “to commence work between the architect and WHS educators as we begin to work out details related to the inside of the building and make recommendations on topics such as site design, furniture, fixtures, and equipment as well as academic adjacencies, among other decisions.  Educators voices on these important topics will inform design decisions made by our team and SBC.”

Mayor McCarthy and the Superintendent will share more details on the next steps at the next SBC and School Committee meeting.
