The Genesis Foundation for Children

The History of The Genesis Foundation for Children

Founded in 1982 by Dr. Murray Feingold, The Genesis Fund, re-named The Genesis Foundation for Children in 2014, provides funding for the diagnosis and compassionate, coordinated care of children born with physical and intellectual disabilities and genetic disorders.  Through innovative Clinical, Educational, and Life Enrichment programs the organization is striving to accomplish its mission. Since our inception, we have provided diagnosis, care and guidance to over 60,000 children and families around the state of Massachusetts and New England.

The Genesis Foundation primarily funds The Feingold Center for Children, located at Boston Children’s Hospital.  The Feingold Center addresses the clinical needs of the child and provides comprehensive care which includes making referrals to the best medical specialists, coordinating multiple appointments, offering satellite clinics in local communities, and having sufficient time to answer the many questions that parents have regarding their child’s condition and care.  Funding is also given to support the Therapy and Performing Arts program, which provides therapeutic arts and recreational programs on Cape Cod, and the Pregnancy Exposure InfoLine, which provides education and information concerning exposures that could potentially harm a developing baby.

The first major event held to benefit The Genesis Foundation was an evening with illustrious dancer, Rudolph Nureyev. A concert by the legendary tenor Luciano Pavarotti soon followed and later, an unforgettable Gala at Filene’s.  Additional events were added including the annual John Havlicek Celebrity Fishing Tournament, which kicked off over 30 years ago, Welch’s Legends Golf Tournament, KISS 108’s summer concert, the Children’s Miracle Network Telethon, and Yaz Day on the field at Fenway Park. But, that was just the beginning. We have raised $30M since our inception by organizing events and by benefiting from our list of supporters that include our board members, individuals, state and local organizations, and companies. Today we continue to hold exceptional fundraising events – for more information on our current offerings, please see the Events page for further details.  Additional ways that funds are raised include corporate sponsorships, grants, point-of-purchase campaigns, individual donations, and 3rd party events.  There are many ways you can support The Genesis Foundation for Children – click here to learn more.

The Feingold Center for Children innovated a system for coordinating multiple appointments so that its patients are seen by more than one specialist at the same visit. Six satellite clinics have been established in various New England communities, thus limiting the need for these families to make frequent trips to Boston.  The Therapy and the Performing Arts program is held in three sessions during the school year, in Bourne, MA on Cape Cod, and is funded solely by The Genesis Foundation.

The Pregnancy Exposure InfoLine was established in 1983 as an auxiliary service provided by the National Birth Defects Center (renamed The Feingold Center for Children), to answer the questions of concerned of prospective parents regarding potential effects that environmental agents might have on their unborn baby. This is a free service and is also funded solely by The Genesis Foundation.

The need for these programs remains, which is why it is even more essential that The Genesis Foundation continues to fulfill its promise to help children with complex genetic disorders.
